Perhaps intended as a southern Gothic novel, it seems like a jingoistic iand racist trope filled book. The plot is written in a prose style that is very clumsy, and the whole book feels a little bit like some sort of war porn. The excuse that it is set in 1946 justifying repeated referencing to the Japs versus the principaled American soldier doesn’t cut it. As a lawyer myself, the courtroom scenes to my eyes are again simply stereotypical tropes.
I thought maybe some of this could be excused by Mr. Grisham, at the time it was written, perhaps being a young writer, when I see that the publication date was 2018. This is not a good book, either in it’s prose, narrative drive, or character studies. I couldn’t finish it.
