Its a good movie to watch for inspiration and feel good vibes, It's very satisfying to see the ballet steps come into the animation world. And speaking of animation, its really good, and the way it captures the dance movements of the characters, sometimes it looks somehow questionable yet okay. Everything else is good but I have a few problems with it.
The original dialouge is off-putting and has questionable timing. Felicies training in reality does not work that easily, in the movie's timeline it seemed that felicie already became advanced in just a few days because of odette's supposed ballerina training. I found it very unrealistic and dangerous for young people watching to copy felicie standing en pointe with boots and sandals and them copying her training causing them to become injured or overstreched with false expectations to become expert in just a few days.
And its quite unrealistic when she beats the other ballerinas who have trained for years compared to her who had training with only a few days worth. (the part where the other girl gets eliminated because she couldnt get up from a split comparing it to felicie who did horrible at everything and should have been the one to get eliminated instead) I think it would be better if the reason she passed was because of a more horrible ballerina/ a second chance to compete/ pure elimination. The story is uhh okay, but I also have a problem with the main conflict.
There should have been more to make felicie stand up against odette and not practice, instead of the useless love triangle and camille telling her shes nothing, because I really dont think its enough (if you dont add ruddy in the movie, tbh everything else will still be the same)
ALSO the old pointe shoe trope of "oh these are my old pointe shoes, I used to love them but I cant dance anymore so here you go"
If you dont know, pointe shoes die easily when broken by and used by an ex proffesional ballerina like odette, like man, she cant use those pointe shoes anymore, and it's even more surprising how much it matches her feet despite pointe shoes being measured properly as to fit the dancers EXACT measurements. Or i dont know, maybe odette hasn't used those pointe shoes and it happened to exactly fit with felicies size. ALSO the you cant dance without passion/ emotion trope AND the snobby "great dancers are sassy and horrible trope with camille. I also find it infuriating to see Felicie dance en pointe with NO POINTE SHOES especially at their dance battle. ALSO Its questionable and off putting that camille's character turned 180 degrees at the near end of the film (when Camille's mom LITERALLY went to murder felicie in the most funny, cartoonish and just questionable way. Like it dosent even fit with the movie anymore. (I also think Felicie's voice could have been lower? to fit her.) And if you listen to the original voices of the movies, it literally sounds like a comedy, the remake thats also in netflix is a tad bit better.
I think if the writers thought of eliminating her from the audition and then letting her start her ballet training (training at the opera/or with odette) then making the viewers inspired by her growth. She auditions again in a few years and gets in the nutcracker +victor making his dream come true with felicie as well as the orphanage getting shocked seeing her on stage.
But despite all the problems, with that being said, I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I just think a few changes would have made it even more phenomenal. and better. This movie had so much potential but not much was spent. Inspiration wise? Great. Realisim? Not so much.
