This film hit very hard. As someone who has suffered with depression and the ‘pain’ that Nicholas referred to I could empathize with his character.
I feel the film portrayed his struggle perfectly, with his inability to function or go to school along with the pressure from his parents.
It seems that despite his Father going through the same pressures at his age, he probably hadn’t felt the depression that Nicholas suffered with and therefore couldn’t empathize or see the warning signs.
I was left in tears at the end of this film. The pain of the Son ultimately passed onto his Father.
Side Note:
I’ve experienced first hand, that in the UK there is very little in the way of mental health services for people in a crisis (children or adults) and that terrifies me.
