I HIGHLY recommend The Toll and the entire Arc of a Scythe series to anyone who likes dystopian, epistolary, adventure, fantasy, and sci-fi, because this series has elements of all of them!
Now getting into the spoiler-filled portion of this review, The Toll had so many storylines that I enjoyed and that kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire book. Overall, I feel that the only flaw this book has is how rushed the climax and resolution of the book was. I feel that the build up was amazing but when it came to the actual climax, it felt, well, anti-climactic. Rather than a stereotypical final battle, Citra and Rowan essentially ‘give up’ and decide to leave rather than stay and fight. Sure, it all works out in the end, but they don’t know that when they leave. I feel that the climax could have been done better, but Shusterman got where he needed to in the end. The addition of space into the whole scheme of things felt very natural for the series and I enjoyed that it went that route, also tying it back to Godard’s origins. Honestly I had forgotten he was Xenocrates’s apprentice ever since the first book, so I’m glad it reminded me of that. I feel that in his own way, Neal Shusterman put a perfect ending on this series and that everything that needed to happen did happen. I highly recommend and I can’t wait for Gleanings!
