This movie deserved five stars. However, the lack of music, song and dance, considering the lifetime of achievements Luhrmann had to pull from, makes us feel like we are watching an after school special with Tom Hanks narrating, rather than seeing the megastars we deserved. But do we deserve them? Do we deserve Elvis? This film does begin to scratch the surface (begins) on the little known fact that Elvis is a superstar simply because of his proximity to Black music/lives, but like every scene (we almost get to see), we are cut short of anything meaningful/informative. We are left feeling…scratched. There is absolutely no resonance or satisfaction in any of the culture Luhrman pulled from to create this film... I take that back, the black women, who go nameless the entire show, sing and perform beautifully. I would even say their performances were the highlight of our show. Black Characterless woman vocally-soaring. How can one cry in the trailer, but leave early from the theater with the gross feeling that we are participating in white erasure? Elvis. You missed your opportunity and disappoint.
