Resurrecting a story from 35 years ago and doing it justice was always going to be a stretch. Cruise struggles manfully with his mission impossible but in the end TG Maverick finds itself pulling too many Gs…crushed by the weight of its own nostalgia, the film feels like it’s performing it’s own tribute act rather than being a credible drama in its own right. There’s some other not-so-subtle borrowing from other aero/space movies too with action sequences that were first seen in Star Wars and The Right Stuff/First Man too. Entertaining enough if you can overlook the awfully wooden script spoken by a supporting cast of ciphers whose main role seems to be to re-animate cliches from the original
