A superb rendition of this Jane Austen story.
Amanda Root as Anne Elliot, facing spinster hood at the advanced age of 27.
Ciarán Hinds as Captain Wentworth, a man hardened by rejection and battle.
Can they ever, will they ever?
Anne Elliot is a woman favored for her character, and perhaps will end up alone for all her life because of it. She is generous, honorable and reserved.
Captain Wentworth, home from the sea, where he has made a small fortune taking prizes in the Napoleonic wars, returns to his home region, and so that the family that rejected him when he had nothing can see what he has made of himself.
But then he sees Anne, the object of his affection so long ago, and how she is as wounded as he. How will he act? How will she act?
The last line of the movie belongs to someone who is oblivious in his world, and would never understand others because he doesn't understand himself. But we, the audience, know how wrong he is.
