First of all credit where credit is due - Zoya is a brilliant storyteller and this show is no exception. Weaving a narrative around its main characters and injecting new stories with new characters with each wedding keeps the show intriguing.
She has an uncanny ability to bring out social issues (however arcane) through the cracks of the facade of high society.
All that said, who are these people who are portrayed in this show really?
We know Zoya’s penchant for the uber rich - from European vacations in ZNMD to millionaires cruise in mediterranean in DDD, it seems her threshold of wealth of her characters is increasing much faster than inflation in India with each new project.
MIH almost always portrays families that exhibit wealth in hundreds if not thousands of crores. We know that Indian weddings can be lavish but the kind of splendor and the background of the people in MIH is at the next level.
These are the 1% of the 1% Indians who speak Bombay accented English, have an army of servants at their beck and call, live in colonial houses or refurbished Mughal palaces and have created an impenetrable bubble from the rest of India.
My guess is that a few thousand, maybe a few tens of thousands people in India can relate to that lifestyle. For the rest of us plebeians Zoya made Gully Boy as a consolation prize.
Overall a nice treat to watch. MIH is a sneak peak into the excesses of the super rich and their pettifoggery over trivialities that only rich can afford to care for. 4 stars for a candy of a show, -1 for the disconnect from real India
