If you are a fan that only watched the previous Hellboy movies without actually reading the comics, you’d probably give this one a pass. However, if you are a fan of both the comics and the movies, you’d probably have mixed feelings. If you are for some reason had never watched the movies and only read the comics, then you’d probably like it. This was filmed on a shoestring budget and its reflected in the sometimes cheap CGI effect. However, the whole plot follows true to Mignola’s style of comic. In fact, it really feels like every part was taken from a comic book version. Its dark, almost no comedy vibe, filled with characters that would have non- American reaching for google translate or mercifully rely on the subtitle. Its not the best in terms of cinematic extravagance compared to the prior films, but there is a dark, twisted and sickly story within it. So, stay for the story, do not stay for the effects.
