An overall unrealistic but nevertheless solid narrative, Gunpowder Milkshake introduces its audience to a world of bloody bullets and neon glow, complex relationships and extreme combat. Karen Gillan is a fun lead, someone we need more of in feature-length films. Carrying the film as the aggressive-but-merciful hitwoman, Sam, Karen manages to carve out a spot for herself in a genre of film so already explored. In addition, Gunpowder Milkshake also boasts an impressive roster of seriously badass supporting females, including the likes of Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino. And while there is indeed some excessively bloody violence here, the lack of harsh language makes Gunpowder Milkshake relatively easy on the ears (most of the time, anyway). All-in-all, this milkshake of a movie may not be the greatest flavor, but it is nevertheless a sweet concoction.
