I'd like to add that this review contains spoilers to the book, although I wouldn't get too hung up if you do get spoiled, this book is not worth the worry.
If you have any ounce of common sense I'd suggest giving this book a miss. Having just gotten back into reading, I joined a book club who offered this to me and honestly it looked promising. The premise is fantastic and has huge potential, however this falls flat when you actually go ahead and read it.
We start off with our main character Romy, a girl who was born in space and hasn't been in contact with human beings for 4 years. Cool opening right? The extreme detrimental effects of isolation will be a good plot point for a reader! Oh nevermind she writes fanfics to pass the time, and they're a little bit hard to read at best. We also seem to get no description of the ship's technological interior, despite plenty of room to do so considering this book is set well over 100 years into the future? And then when the UPN takes over her system, the emails look like they've been constructed by a 14 year old writing an entry for their school's book festival, with an extremely cliché catchphrase i might add, and her trustworthiness is downright unbelievable even for a young girl who has never been to earth.
The J plotline also left a bitter distaste in my mouth, as the author describing a 16 year old imagining a 22 year old date her and whatnot was not my idea of a fun read.
Furthermore, the twist is mediocre at best, why would the UPR be a registered item able to be scanned on the ship's radar? And J's speech patterns being based off her fics? It's almost laughable how much this reeks of 16 year old's entry to a story writing competition and even as someone of that age myself I despised every second of reading this book. Please don't waste your money on this bizarre and boring fanfic.
