Like many other shows similar to this, the judging made no sense. I felt they were judging based on personal option rather than technical application and creativity. First of all, I did not think Deborah deserved to win. She had pieces that I thought were too simple and just not creative at all and she could make the show very uncomfortable to watch with how much political stuff she brought in. I just want to watch cool pieces of glass get made. And then I’m season 3 when she was a judge, I watched the first episode and couldn’t watch more.
First of all, when they critiqued Robs piece on his ADHD using different color glass to make a marionette sitting on ton of an hollow egg shape to represent his struggle with different ideas, I thought it was brilliant. He was using different colors to represent all the ideas he goes through while sitting on a fragile egg that could break at any moment. It was very well thought out and I could interpret it well….. Deborah said that the piece was too didactic bc he told you what to see as opposed to being interpreted. THEN they went to Trenton’s piece of a “wooden” statue that he made from his culture, which I could easily argue was didactic as well AND had little creativity required bc they even said that those statues are usually made from wood. And of course there was nothing bad to say about it and they loved it. Then at Brennas work, she thought it was too simplistic…. How? She made an amazing female figure with gold twine wrapped around her and a tiny butterfly on her hand and an egg strap that she broke to look like she was breaking out of a shell. It was amazing. Maddys work I have to agree was a bit simple but it worked well for what she was trying to say. John Morgan’s was amazing as well. Dans hand was done well but again it surprised me that some work like brennas was called simple but dans wasn’t. It was a hand holding a door stopper….. I do agree that Claire could have done more with how good I know she is. And then Graces piece was literally a bunch of collars put together in a weird ball shape. I could have made it exactly like that with playdo. It was probably the simplest thing on display and the judges “loved it”. And again John sharvin, had a pretty good piece, he just needed better technique. Minh’s was beautifulllll but Deborah couldn’t see the point of the piece. Funny it was almost like she wanted it to tell her what to think *cough* Robs piece *cough* but that can’t be right cause she doesn’t like anything to be “didactic”. MY interpretation, which is what she said she liked, is that Minh had to grow out of her vanity into a new person. They missed the real point of course.
Overall, the challenge was to make something that showed who they were as a person and their growth. So I think they should have been looking for technical application, not judging how some one chooses to see their transformation. Even if it is a shell and butterfly. The judging just made no sense and seemed very personally biased. I don’t plan on watching this show with these judges ever.
