If Emily Perez proves anything, it’s that some films get into the Oscars not because of quality, but because of Hollywood politics. It’s a shallow, soulless copy of much better films that came before it—weak script, artificial performances, and direction that feels like it’s just ticking off a festival checklist. The fact that this got nominated is scarier than the film itself.

“Testament of Youth” (2014) offers a profound portrayal of World War I from the perspective of Vera Brittain, a writer and peace activist. It is a narrative blending grief, love, and the impact of war on women. Alicia Vikander’s outstanding performance and the film’s poignant yet poetic atmosphere elevate it beyond a mere historical drama.

“Gladiator 2” fails to meet the standards of the first film. Weak character development and a monotonous script make it lack the necessary appeal. While performances, particularly by Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, were technically strong, they couldn’t provide the depth needed for the characters or elevate the film from its flat narrative.

“The Critic,” featuring Ian McKellen’s stellar performance, delves into the dark world of power and ambition in 1930s London. With sharp dialogue and impeccable production design, it captivates, though it occasionally gets lost in unnecessary complexity. A must-watch for fans of historical dramas!

The Wicked movie is visually stunning with impressive special effects and set design, drawing viewers in with its spectacle. However, when compared to the theatrical version, it lacks emotional depth and character development. While the lead performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are captivating, many of the nuanced complexities of the characters that were evident in the stage production feel sidelined. Ultimately, the film leans more on its visual and musical appeal rather than deeply exploring the relationships, which may disappoint fans of the Broadway version.

Brooklyn (2015) is a deeply moving drama about an Irish immigrant, Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), navigating the emotional complexities of home, identity, and belonging in 1950s America. Ronan’s outstanding performance anchors the film, while the storytelling beautifully captures the struggles of migration and personal growth. With strong direction by John Crowley and a poignant script, Brooklyn explores the challenges of starting over in a new world, making it a memorable and heartfelt cinematic experience.
