Prologue or important clarification:
I don't recall ever giving a star on any review. Please don't think this is hate or something. I don't know the actors or the directors, there is nothing personal. I even had high hopes for the movie as it was highly recommended to me, but I don't see how this movie can have more than one star.
Also, maybe some will want to call me a boomer or something. To them I would clarify that I have seen quite absurd movies before. From the top of my head I can think of: Pink Flamingos, Begotten, Nirvana, Crash, A Serbian Film, Ebola Syndrome, Even Dwarfs Started Small, Mermaid in a Manhole, Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky, Nekromantik, Schramm, La Matanza Cannibal de los Garrulos Lisergicos...
Okay, I don't find them good, but I think they are better than a star, well, maybe not the last one...
Going back to the movie in question, some say it is deep and meaningful, but there is certainly nothing deep in the pseudo-philosophical and pseudo-scientific plot. There is not the slightest hint of a new idea or a new perspective, never mind a good exposition of what it purports to be.
The argument is tedious, absurd, illogical and also predictable. The way the creators of this movie want to avoid the above is by introducing absurd elements that want to distract you from the childish plot. The film ends with the classic Hollywood cliché where love finally triumphs.
If you want an original movie, you won't find it at Everything Everywhere All at Once. If you want a pretentious, nonsensical plot that aspires to be edgy or deep, you might be in the right place. This movie is completely forgettable and I'm sure no one will talk about it in the future. It's just a gimmick that will pass with the tide.
The only reasons I could give another star is the original music and the acting. The acting is heroic considering how bad the movie is. It's fascinating how well the actors managed to do ther job, so kudos to them. Maybe I could give it another star, but the movie is too bad for the reasons stated.
Anyway, I find it fascinating to read the comments, especially those who say that it is one of the best movies ever and that it is in their top 3 or 5 of favorites. I bet they'll almost forget about this, their 'favorite' movie in a couple of years.
