I won't lie, usually I don't bother writing movie reviews. But "Over the Moon" hits different. It's a perfect mix of the feels, heart wretching romance, adventure, and some mythical edges. Looking at the other reviews, I can understand some people not liking the whole -goddess on the moon- part but I feel like it's a shame if you don't give this movie an unbiased watch. Like, come on, is a slight mythical aspect that bad? And it's literally sci fi/fantasy for a reason. Does everything have to make sense (building a rocket in about 2 days, immortality pills' origin)? Chill and enjoy the movie.
I'm trying not to spoil anything but the plot of the story can easily be related to, as it deals with a desire for the unknown, the pains of love forced apart, and depression, bitterness. Personally, it's been one of the best movies (I've seen) that introduce foreign cultures and beliefs to the western audience. It's admirable that the production team collaborated with a Chinese company and took the time to try to accurately represent Chinese lifestyles and you can especially tell by looking at Chang'e 's traditional dresses and hair and the little background details in the human villages. I think the diversity and new ideas are just lovely, the themes of eternal love and loyalty especially.
And the visuals. I love the pop of color, it's gorgeous. It makes things stand out and so freaking aesthetic. The songs are pretty catchy too, I love "Ultraluminary" especially. Give the songs in the movie a couple listens-- they're so cheerful but each song has lines that hit deeply.
This movie is just sweet, definitely one of my favorites of all time. I highly suggest watching, and I'm loving Netflix for venturing down the lane of animation. It's unfair to compare this to the big-time, experienced animators like Disney and Pixar. Give some newbie grace to Netflix and watch unbiasedly. It's worth it.
