Where to start. I grew up on Star Wars, Scalectrix, E.T. and Pacman. The latest trilogy has had good moments but I felt this last film was cliched and far too ‘Hollywood’. The funny moments are often too orchestrated like ‘now you are supposed to laugh’ and there is this endless tedious thing with Rey and Kylo which puts the other characters in the background so you never really feel they are a team. Personally I didn’t rate the Kylo character on screen I felt tired of him. Rey started out interesting but in this film I was frustrated with her character (like Kylo) being so self absorbed.
For me film seems to lose it’s way after an interesting opening but the reality is that the loyalty of many fans will result in it’s flaws being overlooked.
Sorry to sound harsh but it felt like they took Star Wars, injected a shed load of costly special effects and then overlaid it with a superhero film approach, like the execs wanted to play it safe and regurgitate. So much of the film overplays nostalgia like it’s a perfume you can squirt on each scene then at the end you give it some extra.
For me it felt a little vacuous, and I say that reluctantly knowing so much went into it. Some characters I love but it was a huge let down for me and another example of regurgitation and ‘bigger, better with bells’ being a bad thing.
