This is considered a "Noir Western" and rightfully so as it's quite dark at times. It's a bit strange, there's just something a bit weird about the film, fascinatingly so. It's hypnotic. The urban decay-type themes of film noir come through in the form of the titular Yellow Sky, an eerie ghost town that serves as the setting/backdrop of much of the film. Also, Anne Baxter's character is a lot tougher and has more agency than many female characters did in this era of film. She's a sharpshooter and at one point, Gregory Peck's character gets a little too handsy, she fights him off and literally grazes his skull with a bullet, on purpose. Tough lady! Baxter and Peck are great as is Widmark. There's also an awesome horseback chase across a desolate salt flat. This is really a bit of an under-the-radar classic of 40's cinema.
