I was expecting this to be a very bad film. It is not. It is however difficult to pigeon-hole. Bittersweet probably. The film covers some serious issues and is very tense in parts, but never takes itself too seriously. The disruption, noise and chaos at the surgery is typical Altman and some of the performances, notably by Shelley Long and Laura Dern are very funny. Richard Gere plays it very straight, but it is a perfect role for him. I suspect this film is aging better than many others from the same period. Much better and more fun than Pretty Woman which came out around the same time. Well worth a watch in my humble opinion.
