Edit: I want to emphasis that this film has been in creation for 7 years. This is not just a right now conversation, but a long standing effort to bring awareness.
This documentary is not a comprehensive historical deep dive into Palestine and Israel. This documentary speaks specifically to the experience of Jewish Americans who grew up in communities promoting Zionism and Israel. The creators spend time simply explaining the experience of Simone Zimmerman and it sheds light on the indoctrination towards Israel. I want to note at no point anywhere in this film do they claim this is every single Jewish Americans experience.
The viewer sees Simone begin to question some of the history and talking points she is being encouraged to share and spread. She begins simply asking for arguments and points to be expanded so she understands better. We eventually see her explore the occupied territory walking through the West Bank and talking to Palestinians. Here we hear this beautifully profound point where her guide discusses the impact of historical and community trauma. This is a brief moment that could be it’s own documentary. We eventually jump back to the US and see Simone begin her activist work with Jewish peace organizations.
Ultimately the creators do a fabulous job of bringing us along on Simone’s journey of exploring history and humanity.
