Respectful potrayal of the deep knowlege Native cultures had about medicinals ( and remember the scientific study of what worked and what did NOT was your tribal members bodies ) . RESPECT for lead in particular in having honed her skills in reading the signs as a tracker .
BEAUTIFUL cinematography ( up near Calgary I read ) . Aerial shots in particular - her being chased through the grass , the ash in the forest, snow etc. - gorgeous . My little wonderings are hunting opossum that far north ( maybe as it was set in 1700s ) no longer their range . The bog scene - I live in bog country but we are not the upper plains of Comanche territory - again maybe in 1700's ? Wonder how much research writer did put into authentic biomes for that time and range of Comanche . Probably the one that seemed an easy reference , but wonder about it is the French trappers slaughterng the bison ( yes , white dudes later from trains with no ethics ) but at that time the French were after number one BEAVERS and other small mammals as that was the huge market --- and they had no means without horses to do a slaugher of that many bison . ( The camp full of bison hides ? Maybe - but doubt it . ) But handy for writer - but wonder about again was that just easy because then he could include their language and fascinating trapper culture . Just seemed really off historically . The French intermarried a LOT with native women ( Metis in my state and also in Canads of course ) . One does not get accepted by the tribe if one acts like these over the top French trappers ( felt like a cheap trope to me ) . If many cultures were matriarchal does that tension about traditional roles work ( are we putting our modern lens on it ? ) That one is worth digging into -- what do we know about structures of the Commanch in the early 1700's - assuming writer did his due diligence ? She was great -- for any male folks who may not know this there are archetypes and some women can not go against their inclinations --- she was an ARTEMIS ( the hunter - Greek ) through and through and we arr still around . Domesticity bores the hell out of us . I have never watched a Predator movie and the gore gets redundent I tune out . Native actrors - way to go . Now I am watching Rez Dogs to move into modernity on the rez -- all hail hot cheetos . Howah !
