I was struggling to keep awake throughout this epos.
Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was very much below standard (difficult to believe that this is the same actor who showed superb acting skills in the Joker and Beau is Afraid) - his Napoleon appeared to be lethargic, drowsy and flat - not like the focused, ambitious and charismatic leader that this pivotal historic figure must have been.
The plot did not seem to follow a purpose either, the historical background was not elaborated well.
However, the film was visually stunning and some of the scenes about his sometimes toxic and contradictory relationship with Josephine (excellently played by Vanessa Kirby) were interesting and engaging.
So sadly from me no more than a 2,5 star rating.
