The most intellectually written book I’ve ever read. A fictional story nestled in between actual world history. Enlightening and beautiful, jam packed with riveting truth from beginning to end. It almost becomes another story entirely 3/4 of the way through, while being sutured beautifully to the first. There are countless ethical, moral, and political lessons to be taken from Babel. For example, the fictional magic of silver in the 1800’s aligns with the issue of technology / a.i. that we are facing today. We consume because of the convenience and the perks, the benefits it has to offer. But it’s a machine that, in the end, makes the rich richer, puts countless out of work, and takes advantage of the third world countries assembling our first world *comforts*.
This book forced me to consider the cost of large scale problems humans have created and fed into (most likely without even knowing it) throughout history.
Will read again.
Highly recommend.
