Please read this and save yourself some time. Use the 1.5hours of life you will save by not watching this movie and do something else. I have no idea where these positive reviews are coming from...
Henry, played by Austin Abrams, was the flattest character I have ever seen. Emotionless and monotone, while completely lacking a backbone or any kind of redeeming qualities. Nor did he have a backstory that made you care about him at all, including the self-admitted fact that he has had no trials and tribulations in life. Oppositely, Lili Reinhart, who plays Grace, was phenomenal. She demonstrated real, raw emotion and had a hard character to depict... I only continued watching because of her. Poor Grace has a bum knee and still had to carry Henry's character on her back to the finish line.
Some MAJOR issues with the script. First of all, Henry is clearly a stalker with some psychosexual issues; lurking under bleachers and hiding behind a tree in a graveyard. Yet, we are supposed to believe that Grace is the "broken" one. Which brings me to my next point: her entire character is defined by her ex-boyfriend. Without him, she has no story line, which is really unfortunate to depict any young disabled womxn that way. Though speaking of disability, I was hoping that Grace was a disabled character created to represent the disabled community, without an extensive story to explain her use of a cane... and boy was I wrong. When she starts to recover from her past, the cane disappears, along with her shabby clothes, and she looks like a model walking through the halls of a high school... so yeah, not an accurate representation of disabilities.
Henry's 2 best friends consist of a creepy Ed Sheeran who has like 3 lines, and a girl friend who really got the short end of the character-development stick. She is a black womxn who is lesbian and masculine presenting, and I thought that this might bring some much needed representation to the market; however, I was sadly mistaken. She immediately falls in love with a girl she barely knows and who's big line in the movie is about dropping acid. It is almost insulting how shallow her character and relationship is and in no way reflects positively on the black community nor the LGBTQPIA community.
I really could go on. It's "After" level bad. Definitely worse than Twilight. Don't waste your time unless you want to channel your anger toward this movie.
