The outcry of 1* reviews seems to be overly dramatic. I disliked scarlet/violet at first because of lag and quite frankly aside from character and Pokémon graphics it is quite ugly. I'm going to be honest that isn't a big deal since 3/4th of the franchise is quite ugly or not graphically ingenious. But, aside from that this game is great. This is most definitely the best game since gen 5. The story is not obvious as to what will happen, Despite not using items some fights are still pretty "difficult", the evil team is by far the best one since gen 5 the region is very vast and fulfilling to explore despite it's lack of good graphics. The whole school mechanic I also hated at first but i grew to like going back to the hub city to see if I had classes to take after every gym battle even if almost everything being taught was stuff i knew already. The interactions with faculty, or other prevalent characters were quirky but not in a bad way. it is quite a good game, better than Sw/Sh. better than S/M US/UM, better than X/Y (all of this is my opinion obv) and has a strong argument to be better than gens 1 and 2 since those games have aged rather poorly. It may not be on the levels of gens 3/4/5 but every other gen i think there is a solid argument. Great game, definitely worth a play.
