Okay, I'm going to get slammed for this, but here's my opinion: I genuinely enjoyed it. Not for what it could have been, but for what it is. The film and stage viewings I grew up with had a certain tone about them that screamed, "Dramatic Classic," that were professional, spartan, and rather down to earth. This film had a soft feeling about it that made me actually consider on the lives lived by the characters in modern times with more fantastic, yet still very real, problems.
I'm not saying it's perfect, because it's not. There were things I could have definitely gone without when it came to character interpretation and some of the songs made me wince on delivery. Not to mention that the tone in the story goes way to far or not far enough in the places you'd least expect it.
But none of that made me appreciate the movie any less.
So, if you haven't watched this movie yet, just take my advice to observe and take it in before you judge it. It's worth it.
