This screenplay is very clever and sophisticated. It raises many questions about personal and social integrity, BEING HONEST WITH YOURSELF, and dependency. The lead character is destined to bring about the destruction of her family by yielding, aiding, abetting, and passively giving in to someone that has no one's real interest at heart above his own at any given moment. I viewed this as a testimonial to the philosopher William Godwin, who wrote about institutions collapsing under the weight of control because the individuals could not show discipline enough to think of the common good. It provides a pedestal for society to see marriage, family, work and love as a piece of the fabric.

I don't seem to agree that this film is great. In my opinion, it is trite; especially for a film built on a powerful story around a cultural theme that was the measure of social conscious. An unfaithful wife versus a cuckold weak husband who is entrusted with great power and influence sets a stage that is too bold to over look. While the story is supposed to be measured, this telling presents the flaws and weaknesses with too much sympathy and begs the viewer to grant license and empathy. The storybook stage fantasy is a mechanism to make this a film that appeals more to the feminine psyc. To put it bluntly, Anna is a shameful shameless hussy.

Interesting tale based on certain information but I am not believing that everyone is telling the whole truth. Worth watching.

I saw this.in the theater when it was released. I am watching it on TV today and it is still a terrible remake of what was a great television show. While the base plot could be plausible the film SUCKS!
