Firstly, I would like to say the original movie is great and is a classic. Now given that the 1988 movie is what it is, I truly didn’t expect much from this show, cause of the common notion that the sequel is never as good as the source material, nor a tv show inspired by a nostalgic IP.
That being said, I’m a nerd that will probably watch everything that calls back to my childhood, involves Star Wars or comic books. So having this bias and love for the subject, I wonder why Disney with all it’s money, resources and ownership of proven IPs can’t put out a product that is well written or flesh out characters that do not induce eye roles.
The young cast has all the charisma of department store mannequins, which is problematic if you’re depending on them to carry the show. This problem is exaggerated by its writing. Again I want to like this show, but every character in this show is whiny, snarky and with the line delivery of a statue. Then with the wokeness that seemed taped on by Disney to please the twitter crowd. I’m no writer, but I wonder if there is a way to address modern themes of strong female characters, gay/lesbian issues or characters, male incompetence and diversity and inclusion with modern covers of classic rock / pop songs in each episode’s credit role. Wait, there is a way, and it was called Game of Thrones.
Finally, just as a tiny observation here but what was up with the denim “ Greatful Dead Roadie” outfit Willow wore in the flashback scenes. I’d say it’s not a good reflection on the costuming department when you watch the show and think to yourself,” what the hell is that?”
Anywho, I hope this show gets better.
