10/10 binge worthy
I felt the struggle of each tawaif/courtesean. At times you hated them, at times you loved them, you felt their pain, you empathized, you cheered them on.
I've noticed "top critics" complaining of the show's "emptiness" and "sexlessness" and I honestly couldn't tell you where they are getting that from. The beautiful gowns and breathtaking dances are forms of expression that maybe went over their hands. I felt so much emotion in the artform, the actresses did an incredible job. And anyone who understands the female gaze and bollywood culture will appreciate that sex scenes are often more gratuitous than meaningful. I'm glad that didn't waste screen-time on it to pander, it would've been too jarring to see because even though these women fulfilled a certain role, the director and story-tellers made sure to honor them. I think it was masterfully done.
Also I don't want to give too much away, but the anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist themes marks a greater shift in our collective culture to start centering marginalized stories. It gives me great satisfaction to see these stories become more popularized globally and I hope we see more to come.
