Once you have seen director Claude Chabrol's beautiful film( nominated for best Foreign Language Film at the 1992 Golden Globes)other versions of Madame Bovarywill seem like cheap imitations.Todays political correctness prevents the proper portrayal of Madame Bovary as a somewhat heartless schemer who is after all just a small time farmers daughter who marries above her station in life and mistreats her home help and ignores her young child and doesn't appreciate her kind and pleasant doctor husband.Worse still she uproots him from their neighbourhood thus abandoning her widowed father in search of a bigger more entertaining town.She then scolds her husband to make a name for himself and he undertakes a risky new surgery which ends up with a patient losing his leg.Madame Bovary is the kind of woman who's irresponsible behaviour is destined to bring misery to a good family man such as her Dr husband.Her own awareness of her culpability leads her to suicide causing immense grief to her husband who unlike her wealthy lover really does love her very deeply..but it wasn't enough for her....lesson for today's men..avoid the superficial charming and beautiful schemers...(she also deceived her husband by getting him into debt with her spending on clothes)and go for a woman with character)..our Dr was vulnerable having just lost his wife through illness.. The housekeeper who looked after him in his grief was soon sacked by the new Madame Bovary. Read the original ..today's newer films are not faithful to Gustav Flaubert and see Chabrol's film.it even has English subtitles for those of you who would find the spoken French too complicated for you..

Poor Charles Bovary is a decent man and a Doctor.Emma is lucky to marry above her station as she is from a modest smallholding and is pleased for a while to see that she is going up in the world.T.his feeling doesnt last long and she soon becomes disatisfied with her rather fortunate and relatively wealthy status.She has his daughter but neglects it and puts the baby out of the house to be nursed by a stranger. T his woman is not any kind of heroine.her reckless ambition for her husband to try a risky operation results in permanentserious handicap for the patient..She is oblivious of her responsibility for this. She brings great shame and heartbreak to her husband who genuinely loves her. if you meet a woman like this guys run away fast...
