The disaster was a symptom of the breakdown of Russia and this reveals the poverty of the country and the construction shortcuts that facilitated it. The light in the darkness was the selflessness of the 'liquidators' to which the film is dedicated. People who put their country before their lives. Quite unique in a 'me, me' age.
