This is a book that teaches colonial history incedently. Very beautifully etched characters and a view of the times through their lives, gives an insight into how powers that be can take away the control over one’s life and leave you powerless. It builds up on the great famine that India suffered during the British rule, the role of the imperial power; often left unexplained in history books, the migration of Indians to places like Mauritius- all has been made clear through the stories of its characters.
