I'm going to try to keep this as short and to the point as possible-
Pros:
●1000% better than the 2010 film version.
●Pretty magical special effects.
●Cabbage merchant!!! And played by the original voice actor!
●Easter eggs and special homages
Cons:
●With hour long episodes, I expected more time to be spent on building character arcs and key themes. There was time to lay down a greater foundation but it felt rushed and "discombobulated".
●Aang and waterbending...I'll just stop right there.
●Katarra and waterbending...she goes from not raising a ball of water to fighting a master in record time.
●Changes to the story line. Lots of mixed up scenes that are being pushed together or created out of thin air for seemingly no reason at all. Adaptations are expected but I'm still scratching my head over a few of them.
●The acting... While some actors have delivered a solid and stunning performance, I'm trying really hard to allow generosity and patience with others. Especially since some are newer actors and they cannot help the writing they're given. Prince Zuko is growing on me. The actor shines in his more emotional scenes. But for the rest, they're making him come across less tough emo and more whiney give me back my toy. And while none of them will ever be the same as the originals, I feel like Aang out of all should represent the most parallel parts to the original character. Instead, he appears more depressed than anything.
Ultimately, this felt very rushed.
And while I do prefer the drip feed take that the OG provides, perhaps they felt they needed to put as much out there to garner attention and secure a second season to which they will then have the luxury of taking more time to secure proper development.
I haven't written the series off just yet. A lot of shows do better in their second season. I hope the writers will listen to the viewers' critiques and recommendations moving forward. And all in all, I do think it's worth watching and deserves a higher rotten tomatoes score.
