First several hours are really fun, but then game gets more and more boring and annoying as you progress. Here is why:
Cons:
- HORRIBLE grinding. Find another metal in a new biome. Dig it out, smelt it, make new, better items. Repeat. At some point it becomes so boring and annoying. You really need a breath of fresh air.
- no interesting mechanics when it comes to composing the gear, there are just better and worse weapons and armors, that's it (enchanting for instance would give some interesting combinations)
- at some point battling your enemies is like fighting a swarm of flies, distracting you but causing no harm.
- pleasures of hunter-gatherer are limited (comparing to Minecraft for instance) because of stack limits, making it necessary to enlarge storage space etc. In many other ways also the game forces you to do some dire tasks that doesn't enrich the gameplay, but just makes it more cumbersome. If you make it cumbersome, make it interesting. Make it a riddle, give the player some satisfaction from the achievement.
- Some inconsistencies: In my opinion every biome should have some easy and some very difficult enemies. It just makes no sense that you kill everyone in one biome with a single hit and then you make two steps north and all of a sudden you get killed with a couple of hits. In some games it is feasible, look at hardcore classic DIABLO 1 (you are stepping down the levels of the chapel into the source of all evil, makes sense it gets more and more difficult doesn't it?)
- Travelling just takes too long on these immense maps.
Pros:
- interesting graphics, especially when you are new to the game, it gives you some visual pleasure.
- Decent mechanics with food giving you health and stamina. Hunting for good food is something that actually enriches the game.
- Really enjoyable first Troll kill and first Serpent kill.
