This is an excellent book. I avoided it during COVID because I couldn't handle anymore modern history. But it is really brilliant. I made the mistake of reading a lot of the negative reviews, one of which referred to his work as "woke," which is a really absurd and nonsensical analysis of it. But I couldn't afford it at the time and wasn't ready for the possibility of being disappointed by a excellent historian. I wasn't. I am not. This book is fantastic. Most of the other reviewers complained that he did not synthesize his research enough, a complaint which can be reformulated, "But what's going to happen next, Peter?" I am super happy he did not try and predict the future, especially since COVID his right after this book was published. It will stand the test of time.
