I REALLY want to love this show. Since The Walking Dead crashed and burned and was left without any actual conclusion, I've been looking for a good apocalypse show to fill the void. Season 1 was awesome, but going right into Season 2 I immediately was put off by the writing. My main gripes aren't even with the major event in episode 2. The dialogue was so artificial, the whole time listening to it I'm just thinking "seriously?" When the writing is at a point where you're no longer immersed in the story, it's just not enjoyable. Even through the major event in episode two, I was just laughing at the laughable things these characters were saying. Didn't strike any emotional chord with me at all.
Considering Neil Druckman was given more freedom to push his agenda (which he has publicly admitted to 100% having an agenda and not caring what the fans want, while also wanting us to vote and nominate his work into the heavens) I was expecting it, but holy cow. His decision to kill Joel came from a place of genuine hatred for the character, and wanting to push his agenda of girl power, because obviously having a lesbian as the lead must be the most ground breaking thing since sliced bread. You know, when you really think on it. after they race swapped everyone in the show, Ellie is basically the only white character on the show. (But don't worry guys, it's okay, cause she's gay! In case you didn't get that memo)
If it was reversed, and she was the only person of color, the outrage would be through the roof.
The changes made to the adapted material (which was questionable in the first place) was just "okay, but it could be gayer" and this isn't a freaking love story. Yes, there's romance, but Ellie's character arc is meant to be dark, as her trauma is all-consuming, and the need for revenge is what drives her. Dina tries to bring her back from the brink, but Ellie struggles to move past it. They've written Ellie's character to be so immature, goofy, and arrogant. While it's entertaining subjectively, you don't really feel anything for her on a deeper level. The deeper moments with this Ellie character make me feel nothing. But that's what we viewers want. We want to feel EVERYTHING. The writing for Dina's character is good so far, but seeing as she's only a supporting character/deuteragonist, I don't imagine she could get away with carrying the entire show on her back.
At the end of the day, there's a reason why things like the Minecraft Movie are so successful. Nobody wants a fucking agenda. We just want to enjoy ourselves.
Nobody cares, Hollywood.
