When I first played it back when it came out, I was a little irritated playing as Abbey. I hated having to try to kill Ellie. At the time, not knowing if Abbey would succeed or not was a real drag on the experience. After completing the game, I initially gave it a 4 star. And that was probably generous. After a year or so, I picked it up again and played it through. And this time had a greater appreciation. Before, I rushed through as Abbey because I just didn’t care. This time, I took my time with it and soaked up the story more. Ellie and Abbey are monsters to each other, for essentially the same reason. Sometimes evil needs perspective. A villain to one person is a hero for another.
If you disliked the game and haven’t played it again, I would suggest another play through. The sociopolitical stuff is still annoying but with enough effort you can ignore it and enjoy what the game is, nearly a masterpiece.
