They don't make movies like they used to. With a subject matter and plot that should've been exceptional we have a washed down stereotypical movie which failed to resonate. I now see why it made little impact in the theaters because if I'd paid money for this, I would've been upset. The characters journey is boringly traditional with an end I saw coming from the beginning. Also there was no development, I didn't care for or about this character and anyone else in the film so to me it came across as pointless as their struggles. Even though Keke plays a pimp, which I thought was a fresh take, the Director provides us with very little reason to root for anyone in this film let alone the protagonist. I feel like I watched Cleo from Set it Off's broke down gay cousin try to establish herself in a similar styled movie, but it missed it's point. As great as an actress that Akeelah is, this wasn't her bee.
