I went to see the movie mainly because of Greta Gerwig who previously directed Little Women so well. Greta did not disappoint in this movie on the aspect of it being visually pleasing. That accounts for the minimum one star I had to give anyway.
The rest of the movie was political and is doing a disservice to the young girls that will be wanting to see it.
I’ve seen some reviewers say that those males giving the movie one star are offended that women (the Barbies) in the movie are being given strength. That is not why I gave it one star. I gave it one star because it brought up the valid issue of inequality but then addressed it by making men (the Ken’s) inferior and able to be manipulated by women, and more. As my wife said, rather than ending the movie on a note of men being pathetic and not necessary, it could have shown how men and women though different, should be equals and how working together can result in a better world. There are other unwanted messages being sent where in the beginning baby (dolls) were being abused and destroyed (think abortions) and that big business is only run by bumbling older white males who only care about money.
I know most parents are taking their children to see a movie where both they and their daughters may have “playing Barbies” in common. Seeing advertisements showing Barbie in a pink perfect world is alluring. It was for me being male. Just know ahead of time that you are taking them to a movie not only with all of the above but also one that indoctrinates them into many adult issues and I believe not only misrepresents those issues but then offers unhealthy solutions.
