I dont know how to rate this. It’s horrible but good at the same time. Good because it made me feel things, but horrible because the things I felt are disgust, confusion, nausea, sadness. Structurally, I dont like the way the book is written. Its written in 3rd person and I think translated from spanish so it was sometimes confusing who was speaking or who’s thoughts I was reading. But the book is good at building this unsettling world, and its good at making you feel what the main character feels until he starts tweaking. The book feels pointless but also important in a way I’m not educated enough to understand.
I will never read this book again and would never recommend it but I couldn’t put it down. Im still nauseous. It has important themes like whether or not we can trust the government, but there was like no positivity in the story. No hope. Like I cant think of one good thing that happened except maybe the fact that the people that died dont have to live in a world like this. Horrible read, but also good? I feel sick, and I’m immediately going to try to find a good fun happy book to cleanse my mind and erase this one from my memory. I give it 0 stars but also 5 stars so I’ll leave it at a 3.
———————Spoilers below——————
The book is disturbing, about humans eating humans and treating them like livestock. The main character Marcos is at first disgusted with the world and how he contributes to it. Then he’s given a “female” which is a human without vocal cords and one that is raised in a lab, submissive, and essentially the equivalent to cattle. He essentially rapes her and she becomes pregnant, has a baby and he kills her and they take her baby to replace the one his and his wife lost. I went from rooting for him to fight back, to immediately wishing they all get a plague and humans go extinct like the animals.
