Your expectations will play a big role in whether you like this film. This movie isn't for those who want an action-packed, spoon-fed movie. You have to think for yourself a bit to appreciate it. It's broody,
atmospheric, and expects you to understand the meaning of things yourself.
Without writing out a whole analysis citing examples that'd use spoilers, I'll just say that the story is better crafted than people realize.
This movie/story follows a monster hunter, but isn't about monster hunting. There are several clues that suggest the man is grieving his daughter, and feels a guilt or shame that makes him believe she is at an unrest. This movie is about him trying to give her rest, which he thinks is through vengeance. The monster hunt we're shown is only shown (many others in the movie aren't) because it's relevant to this internal conflict. And like all the best conflicts, the worst happens. I won't spoil it.
I'm a fan of atmosphere, and I think this movie does dark fantasy atmosphere well.
I believe the character reacts in common-sense ways to what happens. Of some of the major events I thought, "If I saw that happen, I'd do X," and he did X (I mention this because a lot of characters in horror movies do absolutely idiotic and unrealistic things in their situations).
I recommend giving it a watch, so long as you have the right expectations, and you don't mind having to do more of the piecing together yourself. Certainly doesn't deserve all the 1-star ratings, in my opinion.
