American Fiction was a well written film that gave voice to the frustration felt by middle class and educated African Americans. Personally, I have made a vow to stop seeing movies that a show African Americans in a bad light (e.g. New Jack City, Breakin, 12 years a slave, Pulp Fiction, Training Day).
American Fiction showed how educated people are sickened by low grade writing and base forms of entertainment. Unfortunately, it also showed how we can be cruel and condescending to people with less education and refinement. Moreover, the main character was terribly judgmental towards his love interest for reading the book with an expletive for a title.
The end was especially entertaining in that the main character comes to grip with his elitism and learns that it is ok to write for a different crowd even if the story line and main characters do not fit into a country club setting.
