While it had the same jump scares and moments of complete silence that had the audience tense about the next sequence, it lacked the stress-inducing situations that made the first movie so great. Almost every 20 minutes the same thing would happen--someone makes noise, the monster comes, they pull out the little girl's hearing aid, they kill the monster. I was never truly scared because I always knew the outcome. The first movie was full of very stressful and exciting situations i.e. Evelyn having the baby, the fireworks, Lee's eventual demise... this movie was just too predictable. Additionally, the sequel just didn't have the same effect in theaters. Maybe it was because it was a full theater so it was never actually quiet - people kept fidgeting their chair or with their popcorn - but it didn't have the same frightening and breathtaking effect that the first one did in theaters. Visually, the movie was stunning. Lots of great shots and references to the first movie. The acting was amazing. Blunt and the two children are excellent actors (ignoring how annoying the boy's character was). Overall, it wasn't a bad movie, but I think it lacked many things that the first movie excelled in which made the experience of watching it go above and beyond what was expected.
