This movie was so unlike any horror I have watched. So different and unique with an ending that I found to be tragic yet somehow uplifting. I can’t adequately put into words the emotional connection I felt with the characters especially Catherine, the protagonist.
I understand why it splits opinions, because it’s very subtle in how the story is told. It’s not meant to be terrifying in the usual fashion a horror film is. In fact I would hesitate to describe it as a horror. Spiritual / supernatural would be more accurate.
It’s a film that is meant to change your perspective on life and death, in that they are connected in ways we cannot fathom. It also shows that evil in reality is perpetuated by people, albeit sometimes with supernatural influence.
I enjoyed how they tied in aspects of society, the patriarchy and mental illness. Catherine is a woman ahead of her time, as were the previous residents, perhaps that’s part of why they met the fate they did.
The ending has left many unsatisfied. Some people say George did not get justice, but they are wrong. He did get justice, but just not in this life. It’s essentially what the message of the film comes down to. People are fated and will meet that fate in this life or the next. In any case the sheriff has it all figured out in the end anyway, so I am sure people were made aware about what he did.
The production quality and the way shots as well as plot points which were tied in with art, philosophy, religion worked splendidly in my humble opinion. This is not a movie for jump scares, it’s one that is meant to make you reflect on your life, society, the afterlife, death and many other things. To me, it was a beautiful experience, especially the ending.
