Certain aspects of the show hit themes that are very much traditional themes seen in Star Trek. But if you're a Star Trek fan you'd probably notice somethings are driving the narrative to a very incongruent direction. As in the world and reality that actors inhabit in Picard is not the same or even similar to the one that was established in previous shows. And huge attempts at making the show more relevant to a younger audience or even exciting/action oriented seem to just be making the plot watered down, repetitive, confusing at times, unrealistic within the rules previously established within the narrative.
The following points are examples of where the show turns from a stylistic Savoy telling of the adventures in later years of Picard to really just an exacerbated throw up of characters feelings in the moment while writers are trying drag out a plot that they're unsure about to make the 60 minute time slot.
• characters make known their feelings in the moment as oppose to just actually acting through the plot. Literally moments after we see characters reunite after a moment apart they break into bursts of joy or embrace each other like it's been years since they've seen each other. This is also true in Star Trek Discovery, every other scene is a character talking about a feeling or bit of subtext that isn't relevant to the plot in the moment. It's like if in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo all of a sudden decides he likes dudes and wants grow a mullet... No he just wants to live and love Juliet.
•they're reusing characters that should be gone or dead. I loved Data's character and seeing him having a last farewell in the previous season of Picard was the best part of that season. But by all means let's bring him back for another character cameo in the form of Doctor Soong 200 or so years before we last saw him?
• characters that once had fond farewells in other the series and movies are coming back in not so good fashion.
• technology isn't the plot, the made up technologies are following the plot which seems to be all over the place and not in an entertaining way. For example Agnes finds a twelve gage shotgun in an abandoned vineyard in France (which would really never happen), and uses it to take out the Borg Queen. Not even weapons from the future could kill her. Also transporters which I can recall being site to site at one point, mysteriously always go down and up again.
• what's going on with the visual effects. Star Trek Discovery sets the bar high and Picard isn't anywhere near it.
