This show was actually really good. I watched it before all the drama came out about *that* line and even as a Taylor Swift fan I don’t think it’s worth getting riled up. What the people who haven’t seen it don’t get is that it wasn’t said as a joke, Ginny and her mom were fighting and it was used as an insult. This show deals with 15 year olds, who if we’re honest, aren’t the best people yet. There’s a lot of internalized misogyny and even racism that I think Ginny needs to deal with in the next season, but isn’t that the point of shows? If there was no room for character development then it wouldn’t be an interesting story! This show does a great job of showing how hard it is to be a teenager (especially when you’re not white) and I think what they’re trying to address is important: racism, micro aggressions, sexism, feminism, LGBTQ+ representation, EDs, self harm. And that’s just with Ginny’s half of the show. Georgia is one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen lately and I was actively rooting for her to get away scott free. She’s deeply flawed but still trying to be a great mom and I can’t wait to see what happens in season 2. There’s more I can say, but this is getting long, I’ll just say that you really should give this show a chance. It’s not the best show ever created, but it has a good story and it’s at least entertaining.
Getting caught up on one line in the last episode that was not meant as a joke, but as (in my opinion) a way to highlight Ginny’s internalized misogyny, is bad feminism. There’s a lot of things to criticize the show for: how they handle Ginny’s blackness and that whole oppression Olympics was just...off, but getting upset for a white woman and then going to attack a young black girl and an entire show is not a good look either. Stop infantilizing white women, they don’t need your help.
