I first saw the billboard and thought nah....I don't think so sounds unappealing. I watched the first episode and got hooked. Why? Because it is an old storyline of first love but the way it is presented is totally fresh and new. Hira is a young social outcast who stutters and is often made fun of by his classmates. Kiyoi, on the other hand, is a handsome, athletic, and beautiful young man. Hira, upon meeting him, is mesmerized by Kiyoi's beauty as Hira had always been looking for beauty in the world but unable to capture it with his camera. Kiyoi is also looking for something in life but he is looking for fame as he wants to be a TV star or a pop idol where everyone looks up to him. For Hira, it is love at first sight, almost obsessive as he sees Kioyi as a "God" and he sees himself as his "servant." Both protaganists narrative the story so we look into each of their point of view. Hira narrates his story and it revolves around Kiyoi and his love for him. Hira wants to "shine a light" on him for the rest of his life to bestow his love upon him but only as his servant.
When Kiyoi narrates his side of the story. We began to see a different side to Kioyi no longer a self-absorbed, selfish guy who orders Hira around at his whim for anything he desires. No, Kioyi has fallen in love with Hira but is unable to relate his feelings the same as Hira who can only see Kiyoi as his "God." Both experience many challenges and some light fun to their love for each other. It is a refreshing story of first love between two opposites who cannot convey their real feelings to each other. This story is a re-watch as you must watch it intently inorder to pick up the suble mannerisms and hints the storyline gives on the love between Hir aand Kiyoi. There is a third party involved who falls in love with Hira and makes it difficult for Kioyi who expresses jealousy without even realizing it himself.
A great watch and another masterpiece of BL by Japanese producers. Lead actors are marvelous and give great performances. Their expressions are classics and their eyes are mesmerizing. In my opinion, Japanese producers are the masters of BL they have given us drama, comedy and dark drama in BL. Many Japanese BL are now classics. Watch My Beautiful Man it is certainly worth your time as you will fall in love with it!!!
