I loved the previous god of war game. I will normally play a game to completion but with this one I got about 1/3 of the way through before I decided to call it a day and return it. The player progression, weapon upgrades, crafting & combat never really evolved as I progressed through the game and none of it felt rewarding in any way. The game felt much more linear than the previous game. The best thing about the game was Sindri and Brokkr. I didnt like the Loki/Atreus story - it was hard to like him and I think that as this game is so focused on his story that's where it lost me.
As previous reviews have said, bosses are underwhelming, dialog is terrible and Kratos is not the same Kratos as previous games. One thing I could not stand in the early parts of the game was how Atreus was the one who was instructing Kratos on how to proceed through the game. I get that, that is helpful to new players of the game but at least have Mimir do it. The fact that Atreus was leading Kratos in this game was ridiculous and if anything it should have been more about Kratos trying to protect his son and help him discover his story/powers etc... Kratos should have been taking the lead. The rebellious teenager story is unbelievably cliché and unsophisticated which involved too many temper tantrums and obviously bad decisions.
I play a lot of single person RPG's most recently (LoU & LoUp2, Ghost of Tsushima, Hogwarts.L, Elden Ring). Part of my issue too might be that I finished playing Elden Ring a couple months ago and since then no other game has pulled me in as much.....I'm worried that Elden Ring has ruined all other games for me. Is this a problem for anyone else? : (
