Short version: one of my favorite Halo games to date!
When 343 started making Halo games after bungie, the first couple of entries felt off. I understand now that any company that takes on a game franchise has the difficult task of appeasing both old and new players. When Halo 4 came out, I thought the story was well written but also disliked how much it's straight from the original feel of halo. And while I never finished Halo 5, it's unanimously considered one of the worst games in the series.
Fortunately, 343 made things right with Halo Infinite. It goes back to the original roots of halo, bringing back familiar motifs, scores, enemies and weapons. That being said, it does a fantastic job of appeasing long time Halo fans with nostalgia, while also bringing a fresh take on the story with the Banished and a plethora of new weapons. Also the open world aspect of the game, while at times daunting, makes it highly replayable.
As far as the story goes, I will not be giving out any spoilers. That being said, it is a beautifully crafted tell that contains some of the most beautiful redemption arcs in the series. After finishing the game, I was cheering and had a huge grin on my face. 343 did what many game developers failed to do by taking a series that was once dead and reviving it to its former glory.
Of course, the game has its flaws. The soldier AI system could have been a bit better; I kind of wish Halo 5's teamwork / command mechanics would have been integrated into this entry. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to gather all of your Marines into one place, or wanting a marine to take a separate vehicle. Additionally, some of the levels felt repetitive, as there are several moments through the game where you are just going to different locations to essentially complete the same task. Finally, the map is so large that it is easy to get turned around if you are just playing the main story.Fortunately, the action in the game is so intense that these repetitive instances always end up being a blast regardless!
Halo infinite is a triumphant and emotional final entry in the sequel trilogy of Halo, and one that old fans and new fans alike will enjoy. In my opinion, it is up there with the bleak story of Reach and the epic spiritual journey of Halo 2. Bravo, 343!
