28 years later was a huge disappointment. Spoilers ahead.
The movie started out strong, setting the stage for some sort of cult Leader by showing a scene with a kid whose father was a priest who welcomed the virus, saying it was their salvation. Then cut to an island and a bunch of new characters and the whole time Iโm wondering. โ Where is this young religious kid who seems like heโs a cult leader?โ And a bunch of things happen, we get introduced to this community on an island. They have strict rules about if you get lost while visiting the mainland then no one comes to rescue you. Thereโs a sick mom, and a dad whoโs a little aloof and a liar. The dad and the son run into some new obstacles, which is the fact that the zombies seem to be evolving, or at least some of them get stronger and smarter. Some zombies are super fat because they eat worms all day? Then the son takes the mom to a doctor because he wants to save her, and I thought for sure they were gonna run into the cult leader kid who had grown up. But instead they run into a pregnant zombie? And she gives birth to a normal baby? So did the zombies have sex or did a regular human have sex with a zombie or did she get ZOMBIFIED while she was pregnant? All unclear. Also, the zombie has a very human moment where she is holding hands with the mom as sheโs giving birth, but as soon as the baby is out, she immediately tries to eat the mother. And Iโm just wondering, what was the point of all of this anyways?
Basically, there are a lot of moments in this film that seem to be leading somewhere, to a thickening plot, but ultimately none of them lead anywhere. Nothing else happens with the zombie baby Whoโs not a zombie. The mom gets voluntarily killed by the Doctor, Who tells the son to put her skull on a big pile of skulls. Kind of weird and gross. Then the kid goes and drops the baby back off at his island and goes off into the wilderness on the mainland. Then at the very end of the film, we run into the young religious kid whoโs dressed in really clean golf attire and is leading a group of weird ninja people with the same hair as him. That was an interesting choice, I think if this was a standalone film, with that choice I would be excited to see the sequel, but this movie was just so boring, and had a lot to live up to with the first two films - on a budget that was a lot bigger! and really, the plot basically went nowhere. This could have easily been an episode of black mirror, which would have been more entertaining, and would have told a better story in a smaller amount of time.
The Alpha zombies had a lot of potential, but they really did nothing with them. The zombie baby that wasnโt a zombie had a lot of potential, but they did nothing with it! They were just things happening because they were things happening. It was truly a movie of โ this happens, then this happens, then this happens, and then what if this happens?โ Which is about the most boring type of movie to watch. Love Ralph Fiennes but one good actor does not a movie make. Blegh. Danny Boyle has killed it in the past with movies like โsunshine,โ Iโm just disappointed with his latest film. My ass is chopped.
