In this review, I'll tell you a little bit about this show (Free of major spoilers), I will tell you what audiences i think would enjoy this show, and finally call to attention what makes this show so darn great. Sorry if this runs a bit long, but i assure you this is a thorough review.
OVERVIEW:
This show is about a charming and naïve boy, Steven
Universe, and his adventures with his friends, three magic entities (otherwise known as "Gems") named Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. All three gems have a sworn duty to protect the planet earth at all costs from dangerous corrupted monsters. Season one is mostly just about building character via small mini adventures.
Starting off, the show may seem like it's getting nowhere and it might hit you as cute and funny but bland. However, once season one is over and finished, you begin finding less filler episodes and more plot points. I will give nothing away about the real plot but what i can say is that this show is more than it appears.
There are many episodes with messages that dig deeper than most animated kid's shows. For instance, there is more than one episode focusing on dealing with loss among a family. Seems a bit deeper than just "Sharing is caring", doesn't it?
APPROPRIATE FOR WHAT AUDIENCES?
SU is a family-friendly show, but as I have previously said, it does get into some topics that some kids may find upsetting. Steven Universe does contain topics about death and war, (Although the war happened many years ago) and some controversial things, such as marriage between same-sex individuals. If you are against the LGBTQ+ community, you may not enjoy this show. SU also does have some sexual dancing, but keep in mind it is purely comedic.
One thing that makes this show stand out is that the characters is SU don't sugar-coat things. When they talk about war, they don't act like it was just a little fight or scuffle, they outright confirm that war is a terrible thing where people do get hurt and die. This may upset younger children, but at times it can be quite refreshing to watch a cartoon where they tell the truth about war and death instead of pretending it's harmless for the sake of their preschoolers watching.
FINAL REVIEW:
SU is a vibrant, playful, emotional, plot- filled masterpiece of a show that I believe even adults can and will enjoy very much. It's a great show to settle down to after a hard day of work, or even to just binge watch on a Saturday morning. It has a diverse cast of loveable characters from different sexualities and races. Its color palette can be positively beautiful at times and the character development is wonderfully done. A marvelous watch for the whole family.
Before I end, I'd like to just warn you: DO NOT watch s2 ep1. It will haunt your dreams forever and scar you for life. every time you find yourself alone in the dark, S2 ep1 is there. when you try to go to sleep at night, s2 ep1 is there.
